Happy Coming Out Day
Here’s a video I made just over a year ago (Oct 6, 2010 to be exact) when I decided it was really important to come out to the world. When I was in college I used to walk around campus on National Coming Out Day and wonder if anyone could tell what I was hiding. I’d slowly and carefully walk through the displays in the student center, checking out all the signs and decorations from the corner of my eye, scared to death but completely enamored with all the people who had the guts to say and live the life I couldn’t.
But here I am now, bloggin about being a huge homo like it’s no big thing. So if you can come out, come out. And you know, I was thinking recently, how big and scary it feels to tell someone a secret, even if it’s a productive secret. And maybe today could be the day that you tell someone something. Like maybe today you tell your parents that you’re choosing music over college, or you tell your roommate to pick up her shit, or that you’re sorry for never doing the dishes and you’re going to try harder. Maybe today is the day you tell your friends that he/him/his feels a lot more right than she/her/hers and that they WILL get used to it because they HAVE to. Maybe today is the day you tell your best friend that you want to have a SLEEPOVER sleepover and it’s time to stop fucking around with this ‘platonic’ nonsense. Maybe today is just the day for honesty.
Anyway. I’m on an airplane right now. I’m headed to Atlanta to kick off a month-long tour. I’m 30,000ft in the air and I’m sentimental as fuck, writing this post to tell you to DO THAT THING you’ve been wanting to do. SAY THAT THING you’ve been dying to say. Everyone please go forth and love who you love, lust who you lust, be who you are, do what you know you must. Take that risk and make that change because life is too short to settle for anything less.
